DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – May 19, 2016 – As a leading global distributor of chemicals and related services, safety is the foundation for all aspects of Univar’s operations around the world – from the safe transport, storage and disposal of products, and safe working conditions, to protecting employees, customers, suppliers, and the environment.
In recognition for this unwavering commitment to safety, Univar’s ChemCareSM waste management service business was recently approved to participate in the Star Mobile Workforce Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) at their U.S. Houston facility. This is the highest certification awarded by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for mobile workforces, and recognizes the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health standards beyond the OSHA requirements.
“The VPP certification from OSHA recognizes not only the safety excellence of the ChemCare team, but also our commitment to remain focused on our company values, such as getting our employees and contractors back home every day in the same, or better condition than they came to work,” said Daryl Bladt, Health and Safety Manager at ChemCare.
ChemCare’s Houston facility was rigorously audited by an OSHA evaluation team against very stringent requirements, and exceeded the safety and health management systems necessary for participation in the program. Not only did the ChemCare Houston team exceed federal safety regulations, the team also maintained injury and illness rates below the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for the industry.
Univar first embarked on its pursuit of the VPP certification in 2009. As the ChemCare business grew, the team found themselves conducting more and more hazardous tasks in the industrial and petrochemical industries and recognized the importance of safety excellence and protecting its employees, customers, contractors, and the public, as well as the environment. ChemCare previously and successfully underwent several certification levels before recently attaining star-level VPP status. While the star-level rating is only for ChemCare’s Houston facility, the entire ChemCare team has committed to follow the foundational principles of VPP safety excellence.
“The safety of our employees and contractors is our first priority. Achieving VPP star status further ensures that ‘working safely’ is more than a slogan – it’s a way of life and the foundation of our culture,” said Ray Cook, ChemCare Operations Manager.
About OSHA's VPP
OSHA’s VPP was created in 1982 to recognize and partner with businesses and worksites that show excellence in occupational safety and health. Sites are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards. VPP participants develop and implement systems to effectively identify, evaluate, prevent, and control occupational hazards to prevent employee injuries and illnesses.
Participation in the Star Mobile Workforce program is designed for exemplary worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health management systems. These sites are self-sufficient in their ability to control workplace hazards. Star participants are reevaluated every three to five years, although incident rates are reviewed annually.
ChemCare, a part of the Univar network, provides an innovative waste management service that collects both hazardous and non-hazardous waste products at customer locations in the United States and Canada, and then works with select partners in the waste disposal business to safely transport these materials to licensed third-party treatment, storage and disposal facilities.
