Univar and Tradebe Create Sustainable Partnership to Recycle Waste and Reduce Greenhouse Gases
01 Dec 2014
DOWNERS GROVE, lll. – December 1, 2014 – Using a novel waste-to-energy and beneficial reuse technology, Univar’s ChemCare® waste management service and Tradebe Environmental Services, LLC, have successfully prevented the release of the equivalent of more than 3 million miles of car-emitted CO2.
Since 2004, Tradebe has processed 30.9 million pounds of solid organic waste from ChemCare by employing a patented solid distillation system (SDS) that gives customers an effective and cost-efficient method for recycling organic solid waste that might otherwise be incinerated or landfilled. The system, located onsite at Tradebe’s facility in East Chicago, Ind., is a thermal desorber that uses indirect heat in a rotating tubular oven to drive off the organic waste solvents, which can then be collected, cooled, and reused. Approximately 21 percent (6.5 million pounds) of the waste processed through Tradebe’s SDS is recovered as a reusable, recycled solvent.
“This is an innovation in what has been a slow-to-change technology industry, and our unique thermal process provides a more sustainable alternative for difficult- to-manage solid organic waste,” said Dean Nardi, Executive Vice President of National Sales and Marketing at Tradebe Environmental Services. “With Univar’s national footprint and logistical capabilities, we are able to efficiently move materials to Tradebe sites around the country to provide better solutions for our mutual customers. SDS reporting waste disposal through ChemCare and Tradebe may also offer appealing energy credits or tax incentives for businesses.”
In addition, between 2005 and 2014, this partnership also helped divert more than 9 million pounds of solvents from disposal through Tradebe’s solvent recycling program at its East Chicago facility. Waste is received at the facility from ChemCare in small containers, such as 55-gallon drums, and processed using distillation technology to produce clean solvent that is put back into the market. This process replaces use of virgin petroleum-based solvents and reduces carbon footprint.
“Reducing the environmental impact of our customers’ byproducts is a critical part of the ChemCare vision,” said Greg Vas Nunes, Vice President, Key Accounts, ChemCare and Chemical Manufacturing, at Univar. “We are committed to responsible and superior waste management service for our customers and the partnership with Tradebe demonstrates our commitment to the industry in this area. For more than 20 years, Tradebe has been one of our top alliances, and together we will continue to help customers meet their safety, sustainability, and environmental business goals.”
